The Samurai Creed
Philosophical-Ethical Code
The Samurai Creed represents a poetic and philosophical synthesis of the fundamental values and principles of Bushido. This creed, which is not a formal historical document but rather a spiritual expression, embodies the essence of the samurai’s life and ethics. It has its roots in the deep spiritual and philosophical traditions of ancient Japan and represents a collection of principles and ideals that reflect the essence of the samurai’s life. Through this series of declarations, samurai expressed their commitment to honor, loyalty, justice, and self-discipline. The Creed reflects the depth of their philosophy of life, which sought to harmonize action with virtue and righteousness. This ethical-philosophical code is based on the pursuit of inner perfection and self-control, harmonizing daily actions with values of honesty, rectitude, and loyalty. The Creed emphasizes the concept of wu wei or “effortless action,” which invites samurai to live in harmony with nature and to follow the path of least effort and maximum effectiveness. Through this philosophy, samurai sought to achieve a state of balance and inner peace.
